Background

I am a self-taught Native artist who  recently changed careers to pursue art full time. I work mostly with acrylic inks and paper.  My work has been shown in Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin and is in private collections in Colorado and Virginia.

Style

My work is  influenced by my Native heritage as you can see by the clean, swooping shapes and use of negative space. As I  grew as an artist I added more color to the traditional red/black/white palette.  I find I am drawn to bold colors now, which I use to capture a subject’s energy.

Process

All good art tells a story. In my blog, “I Wonder,” I explore the stories I see around and within me and use those stories as inspiration for my art. I create art that captures wonder or serenity and that offers viewers a moment to rest before diving back into whatever they are facing.

Welcome to Kasku’s Moments of Wonder

Moments of wonder and tranquility for those doing the hard things

I had a rough time after coming home from combat.  After many years of struggle and therapy I realized I wanted to give people who were doing hard things just a moment of wonder and tranquility.  Hard things are different for different people so I create art that captures many moments.  Joy. Triumph. Freedom. Peace.  Just for you.

The Hard Things

Sometimes it's just hard

PTSD is a hard thing. Loss and grieving are hard things. Combating injustice is a hard thing.  But just getting through daily life can also be a hard thing.  By the time I thought to use art to identify and work through my experiences, I was exhausted. Painting helped me get through the tough times.

When I couldn't paint, I also found that sometimes I didn't need to be the creator of a piece of art for it to help me.  Sometimes I recognized myself in an image. Sometimes an image reminded me that I was not alone in my struggles. I don't need art therapy much any more but I still paint the difficult stuff so someone else might realize they are not alone.

Minimalist face with wide eyes and red lips expressing surprise.
